Com-Span supports adults with physical and intellectual disabilities, creating space for people to feel supported and build community. They first formed in a basement in 1974—over 50 years ago!
Com-Span, whose name comes from “spanning the community,” is all about creating equal opportunity for quality of life.
“We’re about inclusivity,” says Emilie Takwa, program manager. “We welcome everyone and want them to feel respected and that they belong.”
Located on Moore Ave. in St. Vital for the past 15 years, Com-Span offers morning sessions where people engage in educational activities, exercise, and ability-building in a supportive environment. A nurse is on site to provide medical support if needed, giving the people that attend the program and their support networks peace of mind while they enjoy meaningful and engaging mornings.
Afternoons are generally for more creative, fun activities—like music therapy, karaoke, arts and crafts, and games like bingo. In summer, programming is partly outdoors, as they make use of the beautiful green space right outside the building.
And the fun doesn’t stop at 66 Moore! Com-Span regularly uses two accessible vans to take people out for fun social activities across the city.
In May 2025, Cambrian was happy to provide Com-Span with a $7,000 donation to help offset the cost of renovating their large bathroom, which involved building a wall to split the space into two rooms.
They also added a sink and moved the ceiling-mounted lift system that helps people with mobility challenges safely use the space. The renovation was completed in about six weeks, and the spaces have been in use for a few months now.
Emilie and Allison Delaurier, Com-Span’s executive director, say the renovation has made a huge difference. The project increased the number of washrooms from four to five, reducing waiting times for people and allowing more time for other activities in the day. The transformation has also allowed for more private, comfortable washroom spaces, allowing for greater dignity of care.
Com-Span is a not-for-profit organization funded by the Province of Manitoba and serves people throughout Winnipeg. Com-Span works with community service workers, schools and other agencies to provide information and tours to those who may be interested in attending the program.
