Why multifactor authentication is important—and how to use it
Keep your online banking account protected with MFA.

Keep your online banking account protected with MFA.
When it comes to personal accounts, such as online banking, it’s important to keep your information secure and private. That’s where multifactor authentication comes in.
Multifactor authentication (MFA) is a security practice where you provide two or more verifiers to gain access to an account. Also known as two-factor authentication (2FA) when using two security factors, though MFA and 2FA are often used interchangeably.
MFA is available for most online banking services, including Cambrian’s. It is strongly recommended to set it up if you haven’t already done so!
When MFA is active for Cambrian Online Banking or Cambrian Mobile Banking, you will need to type in a time-limited code that you receive via SMS message or email to let you log in.
This means even if someone had your login credentials, they still wouldn’t be able to get in because they wouldn’t have access to your text messages or emails.
It’s easy to set up and it adds security, but remember, your account is only as protected as your weakest level of authentication. At Cambrian, since MFA can be through SMS message or email, you should make sure both your phone number and email account are as secure as possible.
For SMS, use a carrier that will not switch your phone number to a new SIM card without personal account access—this will help avoid a SIM swap attack. You can set up a password, sometimes a four-digit personal identification number (PIN), with your cell service provider to ensure no one can take over your phone number. Make your password unique for extra security.
As for email, ensure it is also set up with its own MFA method.
To top it all off, set up a backup method of authentication. For example, if you already use SMS message MFA for online banking, make sure you have email set up with it as well.
This way, if you need to access your Cambrian account while your cell service provider is undergoing maintenance, you will still be able to log in securely using email.
