Potential for fraud related to Canadian packaged bread settlement

Be wary of potential exploitation of the payouts!

Last month, many Canadians started receiving e-Transfers for the Canadian Packaged Bread Class Actions Settlement. Eligible members (who applied for the payout) have received, or will receive, legitimate payments of $24–$49 on a rolling basis between May and July.

It’s important to be aware that fraudsters may use this settlement as an opportunity to scam unsuspecting victims. Awareness of the payouts may be exploited through phishing attempts, fraudulent communications, and intercepted or spoofed e-Transfers designed to get ahold of member credentials or redirect funds.

If you applied to the settlement, or think you might have applied, you may be tempted to trust incoming notifications. Make sure you stay vigilant!

What to know

If you receive an unexpected e-Transfer:

  • Look for proof that you did or didn’t apply (e.g. confirmation of an application in your email inbox). If you’re sure you didn’t apply, the e-Transfer is fraudulent.
  • If you confirm you did apply, ensure timing aligns with the May-July 2026 rollout.
  • Verify the sender is notify@payments.interac.ca.
  • Confirm the amount is within the expected range ($24-$49).

Always access online banking directly rather than clicking email links and use auto-deposit or alerts for added protection.

Key red flags to watch out for include:

  • Any SMS/text claiming to be from Verita (they never send text messages)
  • Requests for personal or banking information
  • Urgent or pressure-based language
  • Unfamiliar senders
  • Suspicious links

If you received a suspicious e-Transfer, do not accept the e-Transfer, do not click any links, do not share information, and contact the official settlement administrator as well as Cambrian at 204-925-2727.

If you clicked a link, accepted a suspicious e-Transfer, or shared information with the sender, immediately call Cambrian to suspend online banking access, get your device screened for malware, and file a police report.
